Twitter introduces #Stickers

Twitter has introduced #Stickers, giving your timeline a taste of Snapchat.

Earlier this week, on June 27, Twitter announced that they have launched #Stickers and that it will be available to iOS and Android over the next few weeks. So what does this mean?

Well, Twitter has jumped on the sticker bandwagon which now allows users to add stickers to their Twitter photos. This mimics the usage of stickers on Snapchat stories. There are more than 200 million Snapchat users worldwide. This is a small number in comparison to Twitter’s 310 million active users per month.

If you’re a Snapchat user, the Twitter stickers will look very familiar. Snapchat is still a very new and underutilised social media platform in South Africa. This is partially due to high data rates in South Africa as well as a lack of marketing push from Snapchat.

The most downloaded app in South Africa remains WhatsApp. One thing is for sure and that is that Twitter has realised the strength Snapchat has on a global scale, and wants to incorporate similar functions.

What sets Twitter stickers apart is that they are now searchable. By simply clicking on a sticker in a tweet you will redirected to a new timeline showing tweets that have used that sticker (similar to a hashtag search).

So what does this mean for us? Well, if you are like me and want to search for the people who are tweeting about cowboy hats, for example, then this is an awesome new function. A simple search on the cowboy hat sticker will show streams of images with that sticker on them.

If stickers on social media don’t excite you and you prefer old school stickers, then this new function might not be for you. But you should try it anyway. I love stickers and I love social media, and I’m excited.
