Time management in an Account Manager’s life is the be all and end all. Account Managers are often expected to be a juggler of sorts and to be able to juggle multiple project and accounts at the same time. Hence the most important skill for an Account Manager is to be able to manage their time efficiently in order to ensure they get to everything timeously.

What is time management?

Time management is the process whereby you constantly plan and exercise control over the amount of time spent on specific activities and tasks. You do this especially to increase your productivity and efficiency.

The importance of time management in an Account Manager’s world

There are only so many hours in a day, which is why it’s of utmost importance to make every second count. Within an agency set-up, it’s believed that the following seven reasons are good to keep in mind when it comes to trying to manage your time better.

Well-managed time will make you feel more efficient

If you manage your time effectively, you’ll be able to do more than you have to do and do it faster. This will not impact the quality of your work, but will allow you to do what needs to be done and do it quickly and effectively. Time management is all about working smarter not harder.

You will feel more calm and in control

For Account Managers, it’s part of the job description to be calm and in control. Learning how to manage your time will reduce the amount of unhealthy stress and anxiety that comes with the job. Knowing how to deal with time pressures, and identifying what is time sensitive and what can wait for another day will improve your ability to manage your portfolio and give you greater peace of mind.

You feel more fulfilled

People often confuse being organised and managing your time well as being time management software junkies, planning for a living and working straight out of a diary without deviation. However, it has been shown that this is often not the case. Effective time management starts with the decisions you make based on your values.

People often make decisions based on what matters to them and if you have made a decision based on your values and do that efficiently, that is time well spent. How you function as a person affects how you feel, hence making decisions based on your personal values will lead you to feel more fulfilled with the time you’ve spent.

You will have more energy

This often seems to be a strange concept. How will I have more energy by doing everything I need to do in a more time efficient and timely manner? Well, it’s known that the act of finishing a task or requirement often gives people a sense of achievement, which will make them feel good about what they’ve done and motivate them to keep on going. Your ability to manage your own time has a direct impact on your energy levels due to the endorphins released in accomplishing a certain task or requirement.

You will develop your skillset

During the process of learning how to manage your time effectively, you’re likely to develop additional skillsets and techniques and learn how to apply them. For example, when learning how to better manage your time in the workplace, you’ll also need to learn how to practise patience, persistence and self-discipline. All of these techniques and skills will help you manage your abilities and improve your efficiency levels.

You achieve what you want, faster

Improving on your time management skills will allow you to finish what you started sooner than you would usually. In terms of a work environment, this will allow you to reach that goal, objective or deadline faster and will motivate you to avoid procrastinating.

You will enjoy life more

At the end of the day, it’s all about enjoying life. When you realise the importance of time management, you will value your time more and use it effectively. The more emphasis you put on your time, you’ll be able to learn how to do what matters and do it in such a way that you can still enjoy your life.

Managing your time tends to bring enjoyment and satisfaction. And, of course, if you are career driven, this matters immensely. Overall, in valuing and appreciating the importance of time management, we learn how to manage it, maximise it and gain additional skills along the way.
