Why Use Drupal?

We’re strong advocates for Drupal, which is one of the most flexible application frameworks around. In this blog post we outline why it should be the foundation on which all websites are built.

In a nutshell, Drupal is an open source software application which is been developed and maintained by a community of hundreds of thousands of users and developers.  The open source development model means that people are constantly improving Drupal and releasing new enhancements which ensure that it remains up to date and that it supports the latest technologies that the Web has to offer.

There are plenty reasons we like it. To start with, Drupal is modular. This means you begin with a basic structure onto which you can add just about any feature you can think of. There are modules for social media networks, such as the Facebook Connect API; modules for e-commerce, for multimedia, for security, for user group management and a whole host more.

At its very heart is a content management system (CMS) that allows people to upload and edit content. Simple What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) editing tools make it a breeze to update, so Drupal has become a firm favourite with organisations ranging from publishing companies with content rich sites to small website owners who don’t want to be beholden to their developer each time a phone number needs to be updated.

Drupal is probably the most search engine friendly of all the development frameworks. If you’ve looked at our other blog posts, you’ll have seen search engine optimisation is a recurring theme. You can have the best looking site on the web, but if no-one knows it’s there, you aren’t going to get much traffic.

Unlike many other frameworks, Drupal gives you absolute control over your URL structure, page titles and meta tags, making it easy to incorporate relevant keywords into some of the primary on-page attributes Google and the other search engines depend upon when assessing the relevance of your site to search queries

Drupal also accommodates multilingual sites very effectively – not a bad feature in for a country with 11 official languages!

Above all else, and this goes back to the first point about the open source environment, Drupal is widely supported by a passionate community. This means there will always be plenty of freely available support. Support we tap into when incorporating new modules into our clients’ sites; and support our clients can tap into if they want a better understanding of how their website works.

The list of organisations using Drupal is substantial. Locally, we’ve developed Drupal-based sites for clients ranging from Media24 to Rhodes Food Group. Internationally, the framework is being used by organisations including the BBC, NASA, NATO, the UN, Yahoo!, the British government and the US White House.
