Anyone who has ever worked in marketing or advertising knows the value of experience. When it comes to obtaining a job, that is. However, did you know that there is value in inexperience? Seriously, though. Stop laughing. Okay, you’re done? Great stuff.
Graduates fresh out of ad school or university may have more to offer your agency than you think. Isn’t it time that we, those already in the industry, give them a chance to shine? If you’re unconvinced, well, let me convince you.
Fresh-faced with fresh ideas
Newbies have new ideas. And, while they may not always be the best ideas, they have plenty of them. It’s time we take advantage of that. To be honest, ideas can sometimes be a numbers game and that’s where 1 000 fresh ideas can come in handy. And the best part is that these youngsters have yet to learn the self-doubt that comes with years in the industry and the number of rejections that accompany those years.
They’re in touch with the youth market
There are few things more cringe-worthy in this industry than reading a middle-aged man’s take on how to relate to the youth of today. Anyway, nobody is more in touch with what the kids want than the kids themselves. And who has the spending power? Those who have minimal expenses and who have yet to accrue any dangerous debt.
Of course, not all your clients are going to be targeting the young ones. But that doesn’t negate the fact that they’re good consumers.
If you want young talent, walk down a street in the Mother City and you’ll bump right into it. So, why aren’t more marketing companies in Cape Town taking advantage of this? Unlike the more experienced, award-winning types who are already earning a good salary at a digital marketing agency in Cape Town, young talent is ready and waiting for an opportunity to make their mark in the industry.
What they lack in speed and need for training is made up by the fact that you can have three in the place of one. Sorry, but we all know it’s true. And it’s not like they don’t get anything out of it. At the end of the day, they walk away with that all-so-important experience.
Don’t worry, seniors, I’m not saying agencies should get rid of you. Employees with experience are still valuable to top marketing companies in Cape Town and elsewhere, especially when it comes to training those without experience. It’s just that the industry needs both in order to thrive.
